WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN JOURNAL

AUTUMN 2024

UPDATING YOU ON RECENT ACTIVITY AND NEWS FROM COVERHAM CHURCH

Autumn has arrived in Coverdale and Coverham churchyard is abuzz with mowing activity.   A team of us have power-scythed and hand raked all the long grass away,  followed by scarifying and finally sowing native yellow rattle seed from Naturescape.  This will start to open the sward of grass in readiness for further wild flowers to flourish in time

In addition, Damien has done such a great job all summer, keeping the mown areas of grass and paths in such good order.  We are happy to say he now uses the Honda mower and Stihl strimmer, purchased by Friends of Coverham Church.  Our aim is to manage the churchyard sustainably for wildlife and yet be fit for its purpose.

Sincere thanks to all who continue to support us in various ways, enabling us to care for and enhance our beautiful churchyard.

Whilst Freddie Lawson has handed over the maintenance of the churchyard to the Friends of Coverham Church, it is pertinant to reflect that his tenure has stretched since 1952.  Freddie’s family, both Lawson and Dawson, are buried at Coverham and it is lovely to see him when he visits, very often on Fridays on his way back from the auction mart at Leyburn.   We are so grateful for all he and his friends have done over the years, including Charles Utley, Wally and Kenny Bell, David Brown, Jim Pearson, John Howard and Howard Thomas.

As with decades gone by, we would love to hear from anybody who could physically help us for the Autumn maintenance and also for specific event preparation.  Please do get in touch via enquiries@coverhamchurch.com.

A short film and photographs from the production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which took place in early September, are now on our Events page or alternatively watch below.  This was an energetic production of many parts charismatically portrayed by the youthful This is My Theatre performers.

We very much look forward to welcoming the renowned Jervaulx Singers for a concert of choral anthems for Advent on Saturday 30th November, at Coverham.  Doors open at 7pm for mulled wine and seasonal treats.  They comprise some of the country’s finest professional voices, all passionate about giving expressive, beautiful performances.

Tickets available to book now on our Forthcoming Events page

Many thanks to Tennants Auctioneers and Scotts Wright Solicitors for their generous sponsorship of this event.
